Agility Trials

All dog shows are spirited events that highlight the handler's connection with their canine.  But whereas conformation is imbued with tradition and elegance, an agility trial is full of speed, precise timing, and thrills!

Dog agility is much newer than conformation shows.  The first was held in England at the famous Crufts Dog Show in 1978.  These events test a handler to navigate their dog through a course of tunnels, ramps, sea-saws, hurdles, tire jumps, weave poles, and to pause on a table for the judge.  Sound exhilarating?  You bet!

Types

The size of the dog is not important since there are different classes and obstacles are adjustable for breeds from Border Collies to Great Danes.  Like conformation shows, agility trials may be All-Breed and open to all AKC-recognized breeds, Specialty- limited to one breed or variety, or Group, such as Sporting or Working.

Requirements

Dogs must be AKC-registered or listed with the AKC Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) program for unregistered dogs of registrable breeds.  The minimum age is 15 months.  Unlike conformation shows, spayed or neutered dogs are eligible since the purpose here is not necessarily to identify top breeding stock.

Getting Started

Agility is a ultimate test of the bond between human handler and canine.  Being able to have your dog successfully and quickly navigate the course requires extensive training.  One of the best ways to get started is contact your local club to see if they offer classes.  Find AKC agility clubs.
